Serbia Arrests Dozens After Clashes at Anti-Government Rally
Serbian authorities have arrested dozens of individuals following violent clashes at a large anti-government protest in Belgrade, underscoring growing political unrest in the Balkan nation. The demonstration, organized by opposition groups and civil society activists, drew thousands of participants demanding greater political transparency, media freedom, and action against alleged government corruption. What began as a peaceful rally turned chaotic when some protesters attempted to breach security barricades near the national parliament building. Riot police responded with tear gas and baton charges, sparking scuffles and prompting panic in parts of the crowd. The Serbian Ministry of Interior reported that over 40 people were detained, including several believed to be affiliated with extremist groups. Authorities also stated that at least 20 police officers were injured in the confrontations. President Aleksandar Vučić condemned the violence and accused certain opposition leaders of inciting unrest. However, human rights organizations and independent observers criticized the government’s heavy-handed response, warning of a shrinking democratic space in the country. The unrest comes amid growing frustration over perceived authoritarianism, economic stagnation, and Serbia’s stalled EU accession talks. Political analysts view the protest as a sign of mounting public discontent, and warn that continued suppression of dissent could further destabilize the country’s fragile political environment.
