Prabowo Affirms Critical Role of Giant Sea Wall Project in National Resilience Strategy

Jakarta, June 21, 2025 – President-elect Prabowo Subianto has emphasized the strategic importance of the Giant Sea Wall project, describing it as vital to Indonesia’s long-term resilience in the face of rising sea levels and climate-related disasters. Speaking at the International Infrastructure Forum in Jakarta, Prabowo highlighted the plan to construct a 500-kilometer sea wall stretching along the northern coast of Java, from Banten to Gresik. The project—estimated to cost up to US$80 billion—aims to protect key coastal cities, including the capital, from frequent tidal flooding and land subsidence. “This is one of the most critical infrastructure projects for the future of our nation,” Prabowo stated. “If we want to ensure the safety of our people and the continuity of our development, we must move decisively.” The initial phase of construction will focus on Jakarta Bay, with an investment of approximately US$8–10 billion, to be funded jointly by the central and regional governments. The government is also preparing a dedicated agency to manage the project, with support from both domestic and international partners. Beyond flood control, the sea wall is expected to contribute to urban redevelopment, maritime logistics, and energy security, making it a multi-sectoral initiative aligned with Indonesia’s broader climate adaptation and infrastructure goals. Experts view the project as a bold but necessary response to environmental challenges, especially for a nation with over 80,000 kilometers of coastline and millions living in vulnerable low-lying areas.
